Here's Your Checklist for Spring Car Maintenance

If you think winter is tough on you, imagine what it can do to your car. At least you get a break from the ravages of the cold weather by sleeping indoors at night. Your poor car, on the other hand, has to endure the icy kiss of winter on a nonstop basis.

Follow this checklist for spring car maintenance to keep your car running smoothly throughout summer.

  • Power wash the underbody of your car. Road salts that collect on your car’s underbelly can cause corrosion to many mechanical parts and components that carry fluids, which can make your car unsafe to drive. Not following this advice could also lower your car’s resale value.
  • Check your tire pressure. Cold weather saps air pressure and hot weather can cause them to expand. As a rule, never exceed the maximum air pressure limits stamped onto the sidewall of your tire and for the smoothest ride, keep to the recommended settings as indicated in your owner’s manual.
  • Have your battery checked. If necessary, replace it or take it to a shop and have it recharged. You can usually tell if your car battery is running on low charge if your interior lights or headlights appear dimmer than normal, or if your car takes a few tries before it starts up.
  • Make sure all belts and hoses are intact. If you’re driving on frayed or cracked belts, you could be headed for a roadside breakdown soon. Wintertime and subzero temperatures can wreak havoc on your car’s belts and hoses, so replace any that look like they’re nearing the end of their usefulness.
  • Get your brakes inspected. Winter driving is when a car’s ABS system gets its greatest workout, and as a result it can cut into the life of your brake pads. Also, road salts can build up under your car and corrode your brakes.
  • Top of all fluids under your hood for good measure, and be sure to get your car in for an oil change if you’re due. Depending upon the type of oil recommended by the manufacturer, you may need one sooner than you think.

You can get all of the above done in no time by visiting your local auto mechanic and having them do it for you. Alternatively, you can use Openbay to compare pricing and book service from quality local shops with the click of a button. Openbay is car repair for today’s world.
