5 Tips to Keep Your Car Running Smoothly in Summer

Girls Summer Driving

Now that you’ve helped your car recover from the ravages of winter, it’s not too early to think about prepping it for summer. After all, just because you don’t have to worry about road salts and subzero temps doesn’t mean your car is in the clear. Hot weather can also do a number on it – and as always, the best remedy for any potential car problem is prevention.

Here are 5 helpful tips to keep your car running smoothly in summer:

  • Get your car’s electrical system checked out. Hot summer heat is already bad enough for your car battery without it getting any help from a malfunctioning electrical system. We had a previous blog posting on keeping your battery alive through winter.
  • Have your car’s coolant changed. This is something that auto mechanics and car manufacturers already recommend on a yearly basis – but the very best time to take care of it is before it’s needed, not during or after.
  • Get your tires rotated, checked for uneven wear, and filled to the proper air pressure. Over-inflating your tires in summer can be bad news, since the heat of driving can expand your tires even more and may lead to a higher risk of blowout or premature, uneven wear.
  • Ask a mechanic to check all hoses and drive belts for frayed edges, cracks, or bulges. Ignoring belts and hoses that are on their last legs is one of the most effective ways of having your car konk-out on the side of the road in any kind of weather.
  • Check your oil on a monthly basis. Naturally, you’ll want to have your engine oil changed on schedule to ensure your car’s efficient performance. But you should also be checking the level at least once per month, and adding oil as needed to keep yourself running smooth.
